Week 4 – Emergency Response & Basic Life Support Boot Camp
Theme & Highlights
This high-energy session teaches students how to recognize and respond to urgent situations—skills that empower them at school, home, and in future clinical rotations.
Hands-Only CPR Drill – Using borrowed or cardboard “compression boards” (sturdy foam pads marked with chest landmarks), learners practice the rhythm of 100–120 compressions per minute to a popular song beat. A facilitator checks hand position and depth, proving lifesaving technique doesn’t require manikins or certification fees.
AED Walk-Through – With a demo trainer (often loaned free from a local EMS agency) or printed AED faceplate, students simulate pad placement and shock prompts, demystifying a device found in malls, gyms, and airports everywhere.
Stop-the-Bleed Station – Rolled gauze, ACE wraps, and a pool noodle become stand-ins for limbs; participants pack and wrap to control “bleeding,” learning pressure, elevation, and tourniquet basics.
Choking & Recovery-Position Relay – Partners practice abdominal thrusts on a pillow tucked under a sweater, then place a classmate (or CPR doll) safely on their side to protect the airway—reinforcing quick thinking when seconds matter.
Scenario Scramble – Teams draw rapid-fire cards (allergic reaction at a picnic, heat stroke at practice, fainting in the hallway) and decide which steps—CPR, EpiPen, cooling, or call 9-1-1—come first. They present reasoning and receive instant feedback from an EMT instructor.
